- the work uses a free-verse style
- the work includes four lines within every stanza, and only includes two sentences within the whole piece
- interestingly, the narrator incorporates a poem within a poem
- the work itself sets out to delineate the narrators story of sending his mother poems he had written, and surprisingly receiving a poem back as her response
- the other poem is, of course, that of his mother- telling her son about the world around her
- a phenomena within the discourse of the piece is the fact that the author is using displacement. He is setting himself aside, taking on different identities: the narrator and the narrators mother.
- the narrator himself know how to write poetry, however, the mother is unfamiliar with the guidelines of writing poetry but although ignorant her poetic voice sings throughout her letter- the author does a nice job with being able to show both
- the writer also does a nice job of staying grounded, minding P's and Q's
