(1) Reportage (Week Three)



She says the Trevi blandly,
another fountain, another Rome
hyperbole. I
for
But I disagree. Beside me, an older man
smiles at his young wife through
the camera lens as she tosses
a euro confidently over her right
shoulder. And I wonder
whether the wish were for another
man she passed on the way
over. Or maybe he was the one
to serve her gelato—something
about his hands seemed almost
***. As I watch others toss themselves
into a coin and that coin into the sea,
I know its weight: romance, not
with lover but to become beloved.
